Elling N. Tjønneland is a senior researcher with the Chr. Michelsen Institute in Bergen, the biggest research institute and think-tank on development studies in Norway. He is an area specialist on Southern Africa and has published and consulted extensively on democratisation, peace and security and development assistance related to that region. His current research interest relates to emerging powers and aid architecture, aid effectivness, SADC and regional co-operation, and South Africa's foreign policy and role in Africa.
